The Threat is Real: Help Protect the Supreme Court of the United States
With the Supreme Court only a vote or two away from overturning Roe v. Wade, pro-choice Americans must be ready to stand up against likely extremist nominees from President Bush. In all likelihood, there will be at least 2 vacancies in the next few years for LIFETIME appointments to the Court.
President Bush has said that if you want to know what kind of justices he’d name to the Supreme Court, look at the choices he’s made for lower court nominations. – Not one of his Court of Appeals nominees has supported a woman’s right to choose.
Why Should I Care About the Federal Courts?
The U.S. Court of Appeals consists of 13 circuits. Each circuit has an average of 15 judges who hold lifetime appointments. These judges hear and rule on between 30,000-50,000 cases / year.
For Comparison: The Supreme Court sits on approximately 100 cases per year.
A decision handed down by a Circuit Court is binding on all states in that circuit.
What we Want: Pro-choice Pennsylvanians want a Supreme Court that will respect the right to privacy, uphold constitutional traditions, and interpret the law with an understanding of its impact on people’s real lives. Recent polls by Gallup and the Associated Press have found that 60% of the public opposes overturning Roe. Most Americans believe that decisions about when to have a child should be private, and that abortion is a matter for women, their families and their doctors- not politicians- to decide.
